Its over 18 months since the last time the GCBPT rolled into Teesside and it’s clear that the locals have been eagerly awaiting its return. With the event sold out well in advance, extra tables were brought in to try and accommodate the demand, and even then some were still disappointed.
When the dust had settled and the cards were in the air, 135 hopefuls had taken their seats – all hoping to take home a share of the £13,500 prize pool.
As was expected Teesside attracted a strong field including many well known faces from the North East poker scene and two previous GCBPT winners – Steve Holden and Colin Pearson – who will be defending his title later in the week.
Players fell thick and fast and as the clock ticked past midnight only 30 players remained. The cash bubble burst not long after 1am with all players in agreement of a £100 saver for 14th place. The next 5 players hung in for just under an hour, before the final table began at 2am.
Play was cagey at first with most pre-flop raises taking down the pot. As the blinds increased though once again players began to fall. At a little after 4am the final came to a close with Paul Gorton taking first place after leading for most of the final table. He takes £4000 plus a seat at the £500+50 main event for his trouble.
