GCBPT Nottingham £500+50 Main Event, 18-20th April 2008

21.04.08 11:30 Age: 4 yrs

The Main Event of the Nottingham leg of the Tour was again a sell-out, carrying carried on where the £100 and £200 side-events left off. The field of 224 (including 75 live and online satellite qualifiers) took to the tables over the two opening days, with the £5,000 adding by Galapoker.co.uk swelling the prize pool to an impressive £118,000. By far the biggest field of any GCBPT event.

Day 1a kicked off with a field of 111 (including alternates) that included Colin Pearson, Dave Colclough, John Taramas, Rory Matthews, Stuart Rutter, John Bousefield, Lynne Beaumont and Ash Abdulah. When play concluded at the end of the 9th level, Dave Maudlin, 3rd place finisher in last year’s Nottingham Festival, was leading the way with over 100,000 chips, followed by local player Donovan Burton.

Day 2 brought back 43 runners, averaging just over 53,000 chips each. Spencer Lawrence had a clear chip lead as the play began. Dave Colclough was one of the first to fall, doubling-up Rupinder Bedi, in a first hour that saw 10 players bust-out. The action predictably tightened as we arrived at the bubble, and it was Xenith Constantinou that fell just before the cash.

Half way through level 16 we were down to the final table of nine.

Short-stack Gordon McCarthy was first out, closely followed by Steve Milton. Daniel Byrom doubled-up James Keys when the latter made his straight on the river, before Richard Howe took a particularly big hit from fellow Teessider Dave Maudlin and went out in 6th. Dave however was soon to follow, before the final four players, all well stacked, agreed to restructure the payout. Thomas Rutter (brother of 2007 2nd-place finisher Stuart) went next before Luong-Huu BuI was all but wiped out by a rampant Rupinder, who used his dominant stack to good effect to whittle away Keys’ chips, until the latter’s all in A7 was beaten by Rupinder’s A9 who paired on the turn to take home first place, and a seat at the Grand Final.
