Main Event Day 1

Once again we were astounded by the support for all aspects of this tour, and with all of the festival £100 and £200 events and the weekend’s main event a complete sell out it meant an action packed week up at the Gala Teesside Casino. With this in mind the £500 Main Event prize pool reached £55,000 (including the £5,000 added by Gala Casinos).

While the event attracted players from all over the UK and Europe it was the local players that dominated the roster, who turned out in support of the tour and their Casino. Other names included our Edinburgh finalists Tony Corrolla, Stan Essen and Scott Morrison as well as our first champion ‘Nice Guy’ Eddie Gaines, it was great to see these guys travelling with us across the border! Popular stars included Doug Henshall, who is the star of ITV’s ‘Primeval’ and Norman Pace who is now a regular face in Poker. Up and coming female player Liv Boeree also entered the event hoping to add to her already impressive portfolio of Poker victories.

Play started at 5.30pm, with blinds at 25/50, a 1 hour clock and a deep stack of 10,000 chips for each player  providing plenty of opportunity for some great Poker play, which is what this tour is all about!

We were well into the second blind level when we lost our first player, and there was a steady trickle players shaking their heads in disappointment and leaving the tables before finding their way to the bar.. We were glad to speak to these players about their beats and downfalls, but most of all we heard about how much they had enjoyed the event despite not making it through to the second day.

Doug fell during level 3 to a bad beat, and Norman followed hot on his heels when his pocket Kings walked into pocket Aces held by the big blind. Yes it does not just happen online!. Liv played steadily, reaching fourth in chip count before her J7 on the BB walked into JQ and with a flop of AJJ its clear to see this was a disaster in the making this was the largest pot up to that point, at 102,000 chips.

Play wrapped up on Day 1 at the end of level 9 with 13 players coming back to fight for the money and a seat at the final TV table on Day 2.
