Day 5 - Edinburgh Main Event Day 2

25.02.07 10:00 Age: 5 yrs

£500+£50 Texas Hold'em NL Freeze Out

Starting Chips: 10,000 Points

Clock: 60 Mins

Day two of the £500 Main Event started just after 2.30pm on Sunday, with 46 players reconvening after just a few hours, and probably restless, sleep. By 8.15pm, following the elimination of the remaining two recognised pros – Henning Grandstad and Dave Colclough (bubble) – we were left with our 8 TV-finalists, each with the chance of making TV history (or, if failing that, at least being seen by their mums!).

Highlights and Selected Key Hands From The Final Table.

Final TV Table

Seat 1 = Gerry O'Farrell 130,700

Seat 2 = Tony Croalla 151,900

Seat 3 = Steve Jelenik 113,800

Seat 4 = Stan Essen 175,000

Seat 5 = Andrew Feenan 146,200

Seat 6 = Scott Morrison 105,600

Seat 7 = Eddie Gaines 226,600

Seat 8 = Irinia Leipini 249,700

Final table started at 23.15 with Norwegian Irinia Leipini with chip lead on 249,700

For all but one this is their first televised final, and nervous smiles were exchanged as the players were wired up with their microphones. Despite this they were clearly glad to be there once the play started.

The first few hands saw our finalists playing tight with virtually no flops seen and chips being passed around the table, however we quickly saw players settling into the new table and play began to spice up with some daring raises and all-in moves.

Hand 4: Small Blind: Stan Essen (Seat 4) 3,000 Big Blind: Andrew Feenan (Seat 5)  6,000 there is also a running ante of 600.

Everyone folds round to Gerry O'Farrell in seat 1 who raises up to 18,000 to play. Andrew in the Big Blind calls after a moments thought. Pre-flop pot is now at 43,800.

Flop- 8-6-10

Andrew bets 30,000 and looks at Gerry, who pauses and calls.

Turn- Q

Andrew bets 40,000, Gerry quickly moves all -in and is called after a moments deliberation by Andrew, who flips over 9-10 (second pair) unfortunately Gerry shows 7-9, the straight.

Andrew needs the Jack in order to be able to turn the tide and split the pot, however the River is a King. Gerry takes down the first all-in pot of the final table.

The action then continues thick and fast as hand 8 of the final table shows the second all-in of the evening.

Small blind Irinia (Seat 8) 3,000 Big Blind Gerry O'Feenan (Seat 1) 6,000, 600 running antes.

Stan Essen raises to 27,000 total, Irinia re-raises to 77,000 total. Stan glances across the table, then down at his chips before shouting All-in!

Irinia calls and shows K-K, Stan winces and reveals A-10 both Clubs.

Flop- J-9-4 no clubs so no flush draw for Stan, Turn- 8, River 7 for a back door straight for Stan! A monster pot of 198,000 chips for Stan and a crushing defeat for Irinia who quickly re-covers her composure.

The third all in of the final table comes just two hands later and saw our first casualty...

Small Blind: Tony Croalla (Seat 2) 3,000 Big Blind Steve Jelenik (Seat 3) 6,000, 600 running ante.

Andrew Feenan, having been wounded by Gerry in hand 4, moves all-in from Seat 5, everyone folds round to the Big Blind, where Steve Jelinek makes an automatic call of 5,900. Steve reveals Q-K, and Andrew is in front with A-K.

Flop- 5-9-Q Turn- 6, River- 8

No help for Andrew, and with Steve having flopped top pair we see our 8th place finisher walk away with £1,890.

We enter a phase of cautious play with players not committing to big pots, and the raiser on the hand able to walk away unchallenged. This is probably due to the presence of TV cameras as all but Steve Jelenik have no prior experience with the televised aspect of the game.

Hand 30 saw a battle between Scott Morrison in seat 6 and Steve Jelenik in seat 3, the hand unfolded as follows:

Small Blind: Gerry O'Farrell (Seat 1) 4,000, Big Blind: Tony Croalia (Seat 2) 8,000 with 800 running antes.

Steve Jelenik raises to 24,000 in total, Scott moves all in for 60,900. Tony passes the hand and after a moments deliberation Steve calls. Scott turns over A-Q and Steve reveals A-9, Scott is ahead for the time being.

Flop- 10-8-Q.... Turn 10....River 10

Scott hits the fullhouse and doubles up to a healthy 139,400 chips!

A few hands later we saw another casualty, it was hand 36 and just before 1am.

Small Blind: Irinia Leipini (Seat 8) 4,000 Big Blind: Gery O'Farrell (Seat 1) 8,000 with running antes of 800.

All fold round to Irinia, who announces all-in and looks across at the big blind. Gerry quickly calls and reveals A-A, Irinia turns over a called bluff of 5-8.

Flop- 3-9-10 Turn- 3 River- King

Irinia who had been an impressive player all event, and entered the final table as the chip leader fell to the mighty bullets, walking away with £2,590. We were sorry to see our sole female finalist go.

It was not long before we saw Tony make a move after being very quiet throughout the final table.

Hand 43: Small Blind: Gerry O'Farrell (Seat 1) 4,000 Big Blind: Tony Croalla (Seat 2) 8,000 with 800 running antes.

Everyone folds round to Eddie Gaines, who raises to 29,000 total, this is followed by a series of folds to the big blind where Tony moves all-in over the top of Eddie's raise.

It is 58,000 more to Eddie if he wants to call. It is a tense few moments before Eddie nods and calls the bet, the cards go over to show Eddie slightly behind Tony's A-J with a K-Q

Flop- 8-10-J..... Turn 7..... River King

Hitting the river card puts Eddie in front and sees Tony leave the table in 6th Place and earning £3,500.

At the first break on the Final table we see the chip count as follows:

Stan Essen: 448,000

Gerry O'Farrell: 296,000

Eddie Gains: 231,000

Steve Jelenik: 186,000

Scot Morrison: 139,000

It was hand 73 before we saw any more fallers, and this hand saw the quiet Scott and Eddie to the formers detriment.

Small Blind: Scott Morris (Seat 6) 6,000 Big Blind: Eddie Gaines (Seat 7) 12,000 with 1,000 running antes.

Scott moves all-in after everyone folding round to his small blind, and is called by Eddie in the Big Blind. The hands are revealed and Scott is behind Eddie's pocket 9's with A-2

Flop- 6-7-3...... Turn- 3 .... River- 4

Both of the players hit the flush with 4 clubs on the board, however Eddie walked away with the pot as his 9, was higher than Scotts 2. As our 5th place finisher Scott walked away from the table with an impressive £4,550.

Just two and half hours into the final table and yet another casualty was produced, this time the clash was between two of our more active players Gerry O'Farrell and Steve Jelenik. Steve's all in on A-9 was called by Gerry's A-K suited and with board being of no help, we saw our 4th place finisher winning 6,300. Steve also goes away with a free entry to the weekly $50,000 ‘Big Deal’ on Galapoker.co.uk.

Hand 92 reduced the tournament to a heads up match with Stan Essen making his move but meeting Gerry head-on.

Small Blind: Eddie Gaines (Seat 7) 8,000 Big Blind: Gerry OFarrell (Seat 1) 16,000, running antes are 1,500

Stan moves all-in under the gun, and Eddy moves out the way, however Gerry calls the extra 125,000. The cards are Q-10 to Gerry and Q-8 to Stan.

Flop- 6-3-7.... Turn- 5 and River- 6

Q-10 plays and Stan, a local player, walks away with £9,240 and 3rd Place.

We are now heads up, with O’Farrell ahead by 460,000. After a period of 20 minutes or so, O'Farrell goes all-in and Gaines calls. Gaines AC JD v O’Farrell’s KS 9S stands up following a low flop that offers neither anything. Gaines now has 500,000 to O’Farrell’s 800,000.

Talks of doing a deal get muted, but both players decide not to collaborate. O’Farrell goes on to bet 50,000 on the flop which Gaines calls. On the turn O’Farrell checks and Gaines bets 140,000, with O’Farrell all-in and Gaines calls. A3Q6A Gaines doubles through.

Very next hand, O’Farrell raises all-in with remaining chips with A 10, and Gaines calls with 77. Flop comes 8 7 4 giving Gaines trips. King on turn and O’Farrell is drawing dead.

We have a result!

Eddie Gaines is victorious and the winner of the inaugural GBPT Main Event at the Edinburgh Maybury Casino! He walks away with £24,500 and a package to the £2,500 Grand Final Main Event - a tasty payout for a day and a half’s work…

For his trouble, O'Farrell wins £14,500 and a seat at the next GBPT Main Event in Teesside over Easter weekend.
